A new smoking cessation service has launched in Walsall Manor Hospital’s Outpatient Department, helping more patients access advice and support to quit smoking.
The service launched on Monday 26 October, building on the success of smoking cessation support already available across the Trust, including its inpatient service and Emergency Department (ED).
The inpatient smoking cessation pathway was developed in response to the NHS Long Term Plan and launched in October 2022.
The Trust also offers a Stop Smoking in Pregnancy service, commissioned by Walsall Council Public Health, to support pregnant people who want to quit smoking.
In July 2025, smoking cessation support was introduced in the ED, helping identify patients who smoke and connect them with community stop smoking services.
Since its launch, the ED service has supported more than 23,000 smoking-related conversations, identified more than 2,200 people who smoke and made almost 1,100 referrals to community stop smoking services.
Alison Yates, Tobacco Dependency Service Lead, said: “We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved through our Emergency Department service, supporting thousands of conversations and helping more than 1,000 people access specialist stop smoking support.
“Launching the new outpatient service is an exciting next step, allowing us to reach even more patients across Walsall Manor Hospital. By working closely with Walsall Council Public Health, we want to make sure people know that support is available and that they don’t have to quit smoking alone.
“This is a huge milestone for our team and partners, and we look forward to helping more people take positive steps towards a smoke-free future.”
