Volunteering

Why not join us as a volunteer? Our volunteers are fantastic! Each one is invaluable and irreplaceable to us, giving their time ‘freely’ through the support they give to our healthcare Trust and more importantly, our patients.

The dedicated team all help to directly support patients and their families and a big part of any volunteer role is talking and listening to patients.

We are indebted to our volunteers for the amazing contribution they make each and every day of the hospital’s life. As such, we are fully committed to enabling, supporting and celebrating volunteering in all its diversity at all times.

As one of our volunteers you will contribute that little extra that can make all the difference to patients’ comfort while in hospital. It really is a rewarding opportunity. There are a variety of activities and opportunities to support and benefit patients, our staff and the communities we care for. We have support and resources for all aspects of volunteering.

Our volunteers help with activities like:

  • meeting, greeting and signposting patients and visitors upon their arrival to the hospital and community venues
  • assisting with serving drinks and meals on the wards
  • caring for the hospital’s courtyards through light gardening and dedicated nurturing
  • informing and assisting in the use of the hospital’s library book lending machine
  • office and ward administration support;
  • our chaplaincy lay visitors support the Trust by visiting patients on wards by chatting, reading or gathering their views about their care and stay.

We hope that you are able to commit to at least six months volunteering with regular weekly shifts of three to four hours. In return you will join a team of dedicated volunteers who really make a difference.

How to become a volunteer

The Trust currently has over 300 volunteers working as part of the Trust’s official volunteer programme or as part of support groups such as Kissing It Better, the Chaplaincy, the League of Friends, Age UK and Link Line.

We’re looking for confident and enthusiastic people who are aged at least 18. You need to be able to display some key personal qualities such as empathy and the ability to listen and observe. You also need to be reliable, a self-starter, and show initiative and attention to detail. All our volunteer roles are non-clinical.

Go on, make a difference today by improving the experience of patients and complementing the care offered by staff.
