A dedicated volunteer has described a “once-in-a-lifetime” experience after shaking hands with His Majesty The King at Buckingham Palace.

Chris Ford was nominated by Georgie Westley, Fundraising Manager for Well Wishers at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, to attend the King’s Garden Party in recognition of her 12 years of dedicated volunteering service at the Trustworking in the Fundraising Hub for the last two years.

The prestigious annual event celebrates individuals from across the UK for their outstanding public service, community contributions, and commitment to making a difference.

Guests from a wide range of professions and backgrounds gathered in the gardens of Buckingham Palace to enjoy traditional afternoon tea and the rare opportunity to meet members of the Royal Family.

Chris, 79, from Aldridge, said: “It was a huge honour to shake the King’s hand.

“I managed to get near the front of the crowd and said to him, ‘I am really pleased to meet you.’ It was an amazing moment.

“I also saw Queen Camilla, who looked beautiful in white. The King was wearing a top hat and tails and looked very smart.

“The grounds were incredible. There was a marquee where guests could enjoy finger sandwiches, wraps, tea and coffee, all served on beautiful China. Everything was delicious.

“There was also a brass band playing throughout the afternoon, which really added to the atmosphere.

“I have always been a huge supporter of the Royal Family and enjoy watching documentaries about them on television.

“I was absolutely honoured to have been nominated. I will probably never have an opportunity like this again, and to be in the King’s presence was truly unforgettable.

“I will never forget this experience.

“I would also like to thank Georgie and Tina Faulkner, Head of Communications, for putting my name forward. They both do amazing work for the hospital, and I really appreciate them thinking of me.”

Georgie said: “Chris has given so much of her time and energy to supporting our hospital and charity over the past 12 years, and we were delighted to nominate her for such a special occasion.

“She is a truly dedicated volunteer who always goes above and beyond to support patients, staff and visitors.

“It was wonderful to see her recognised in this way, and we are so pleased she had such a memorable day.”
