Walsall staff were recognised for their outstanding commitment to improving cancer prevention, screening and early diagnosis at an awards ceremony.

The Black Country ICB Cancer Awards, held on 13 May, celebrate individuals and teams across health, local authority and voluntary sector organisations who are helping to improve cancer outcomes for people.

Partnership working between Walsall Council, Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, and voluntary and community organisations has also helped ensure support reaches the communities most in need.

Colleagues from cancer services across Walsall were recognised during the awards evening.

Joanne Barlow, Lead for the Self-Care and Cancer Outreach Team at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, received the Walsall Individual of the Year award for her work to reduce inequalities in cancer care.

She said: “I’m really honoured to receive this award, but it honestly reflects the people I work with and the communities we support every day.

“I’m passionate about bringing cancer prevention and early diagnosis closer to people, alongside supporting those affected by cancer with personalised emotional and practical support.

“For me, it’s the relationships we build and the way we work together that truly make a difference.”

Claire Murphy, Health Promotion Specialist for Walsall Breast Screening Service, was named Sandwell Individual of the Year in recognition of her outstanding contribution to improving breast cancer screening and awareness across the region.

Nicky Adams, Lead Cancer Nurse at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, received a Long Service Award in recognition of 40 years of dedicated service in cancer care.

Sara Morley, Services Manager for Specialist Palliative and End of Life Care at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, said: “We were privileged to attend the Cancer Care Awards last week. It was inspiring to see the achievements and good work taking place throughout the Black Country.

“We were especially proud of our achievements here in Walsall. Joanne Barlow, Nicky Adams and Sindy Dhallu are just some of the many nominees who were recognised for their hard work and achievements in driving forward cancer prevention and care.

“We look forward to seeing what the future brings. Once again, well done and congratulations to all.”

The awards were hosted by the Black Country Integrated Care Board, supported by the West Midlands Cancer Alliance and Macmillan Cancer Support.
