Mountain climb to help young patients’ experience

2026-04-30T13:55:27+01:00Thursday 30 April 2026|

Walsall NHS staff are set to climb the highest mountain in Wales in memory of a much-loved colleague, as well as raising funds for children’s surgery recovery areas.

Following the success of a fundraising hike they did last year, which raised vital funds to refurbish an anaesthetic room for paediatric patients, this year’s challenge carries even greater significance.

The 40 plus team from Walsall Manor Hospital will climb Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) on May 16 in memory of colleague Sam Smith who died in 2024.

Funds raised will go towards transforming the recovery areas where children go after surgery, helping to create a more welcoming and comforting environment for young patients and their families.

The challenge has also received generous support from local sponsors through Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust’s Well Wishers charity.

Transport for the team has been funded by Geoff’s Decks, J.A.B.S Event Hire, and Walsh Funerals and Memorials, while team T-shirts have been provided by Drain Doctor Walsall.

Joining the group on the climb will be videographer Rob from Red Furnace Media, who is donating his time to capture their efforts through photography, video and, weather permitting, drone footage.

Laura Nunn, Theatre Lead at Walsall Healthcare, said: “We are incredibly proud to be taking on Yr Wyddfa once again this year. Last year’s hike was a huge success, helping us refurbish one of our anaesthetic rooms for the children in our care.

“This year, our journey holds even deeper meaning as we climb in memory of our dear colleague Sam, who we sadly lost. Through this challenge, we hope to continue improving the patient journey by raising enough funds to refurbish our paediatric recovery areas.

“I would like to wish everyone taking part the very best of luck and extend a heartfelt thank you to Georgie from Well Wishers for organising and making this all possible.”

George Westley, Fundraising Manager, said: “We are incredibly proud to support the team from Walsall Manor Hospital as they take on this special challenge. Climbing Yr Wyddfa in memory of Sam, who was a big supporter of the charity, while raising money to improve children’s recovery areas is a wonderful tribute and shows the dedication of our NHS staff.

“It has also been fantastic to see local businesses step forward to support the team, highlighting the strength of community spirit across Walsall. We wish everyone taking part the very best of luck and hope people will get behind them and support this fantastic cause.”
