Young carers – some of whom have never been to the seaside – are being treated to a day trip to Wales thanks to Walsall Healthcare’s Well Wishers charity.

The charity has teamed up with the School Nursing Team and Walsall Council to work with Deena Sobeih from the UPS parcel delivery firm to give young carers a break.

Around 30 young carers, who are supported by School Nurses, will be given the chance to go on a day trip to the seaside in August. A trip was organised for them last year but had to be postponed due to unforeseen circumstances.

Georgie Westley, Fundraising Manager at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, said: “We were disappointed we couldn’t make this happen last summer but promised we’d sort it out for this year because we didn’t want to let them down.

“Well Wishers  supports young carers by providing gifts and toys at Christmas but is well aware their  caring responsibilities mean they often miss out on treats and being able to spend time with friends. We also know some young carers have never been to the seaside which is so sad.

“When Deena got in touch to donate easter eggs to our young patients she asked if there was anything else that could be done to support them – something I’d been thinking over too. And we came up with the idea of organising a daytrip. Deena, who is one of the Fundraising Champions at UPS, then organised lots of fundraising events including a Mount Snowdon climb.”

Deena said: “Talking to Georgie and listening to feedback from the School Nursing Team which supports young carers really struck a chord.

“UPS is so pleased to be working with Well Wishers and others to make a difference, if only for a short time – to these young people. And we’re thrilled the day trip is back on – Wales here we come!

“We’re all busy, both personally and professionally, but it’s important to stop and reflect on others and their situations and make a difference if we can. We’re focused on giving these young carers a great day out to make some lovely memories.”

Councillor Adam Hicken, Portfolio Holder for Children’s and Safer Communities at Walsall Council, said, “This trip promises to be a truly enjoyable day out for our carers, a well-deserved break from their often demanding and exhausting responsibilities.

“Many carers don’t get the opportunity to take part in summer activities, so this trip is a fantastic treat that I know will be appreciated.

“We’re incredibly grateful to Well Wishers and to Deena from UPS for making this possible and for their continued support.”
