Charity emerged as the biggest champion of the night when a popular fundraising boxing event pulled in more than £3,000 for young Walsall patients.

Walsall Healthcare’s Well Wishers charity staged another sellout smash hit at Rushall Labour Club with support from former British Lightweight Champion, International Boxing Federation Super Lightweight Champion and patron of the charity Martin Gethin and his wife Sherilyn, working in partnership with Fundraising Manager Georgie Westley.

This year’s proceeds of £3,230 will go to the Paediatric Assessment Unit and Children’s Emergency Department within the Manor Hospital’s new Urgent and Emergency Care Centre to make the area look less clinical, as well as making the breaking news/family room a more peaceful setting. Toys will also be bought for bays and waiting areas.

Georgie said: “We had another fantastic night of boxing – each year just seems to get better and better, and everyone said how much they enjoyed the bouts as well as the chance to support a good cause.

“We had 10 bouts in total, and we’d like to thank Wolverhampton Boxing Club for providing an exhibition showcase of its young boxers. This was a great experience for them and also showed our guests what amazing sporting talent we have here in the Black Country.

“Well wishers is grateful to Martin and Sherilyn for all their help as ever and JABS Events which is another regular charity supporter. Rushall Labour Club kindly provided the venue free of charge again and its wonderful staff worked tirelessly to make us feel at home. We’d also like to thank all those who donated raffle prizes including our top prizes of a 32inch TV donated by Argos Clearance and a weekend break for four at Away Resorts. See you all next year!”

Martin Gethin added: “Everyone had a whale of a time on Friday night and we’re really pleased at how generous people were in supporting the raffle to help us raise money for the young patients
