“It’s a place where no two days are the same, the hours fly by and people never cease to amaze you – and we love it!”

Matron Lesley Smith is talking about Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust’s Emergency Department which is currently recruiting Band 5 Registered Nurses, a Band 5 Paediatric Registered Nurse and a Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse.

“It’s an area of the hospital that is full of hustle and bustle; a very hectic place,” said Lesley who has worked for the trust for 37 years.

“But we’re very supportive of each other here and teamwork is definitely our ethos.”

Last year the Government confirmed that the Emergency Department would receive £36m of funding for a new department and Interserve Construction has now been appointed to build this. The new building will replace the current building whose physical environment struggles to meet increasing patient flow demands.

The first phase will be working together on design and pre-construction which will be concluded by mid-January 2020 providing the basis for the full business case for NHS England/Improvement approval.  Enabling works are due to start in spring 2020 with the building ready to use by 2022.

“It’s a really good time to join our trust, said Lesley. “Our recent CQC inspection showed that we have made considerable improvements and we have been able to come out of special measures.

“Care across the trust has been rated as “outstanding” and here in ED we were praised for  “outstanding practice” for  Advanced Clinical Practitioner role to improve patient target times for triage and treatment and inspectors highlighted our award-winning initiative to improve patient care for frequent Emergency Department attendees. We’re all thrilled that the department is going to be redeveloped.

“While this is a busy department and ED isn’t for everyone, colleagues who do choose to join us will learn so much and be treated as part of our ED family. We’re recruiting for Band 5 nurses in particular and look forward to hearing from potential candidates who want to support our trust values of Respect, Compassion, Professionalism and Teamwork.”
