A new support group for Gynaecology cancer patients has been launched at Walsall Manor Hospital.
The group was set up by Sarah Hollowood, Macmillan Gynaecology Navigator at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, with the support of the Trust’s Well Wishers charity, Sharna Fletcher, Matron, Julie Oliver, Clinical Nurse Specialist and Jenny, a Volunteer.
Held at the hospital, the new support group creates a welcoming space for patients to meet over a cup of tea and share their experiences of diagnosis and treatment.
It also provides a place for people to reassure one another and form new friendships.
Sarah Hollowood, who supports patients from the start of their treatment, was on hand throughout the session to answer questions, provide guidance and offer reassurance.
Inspired by the success of existing Upper GI and men’s cancer support groups, Sarah wanted to create a similar opportunity for women receiving Gynaecology care.
Sarah said: “After seeing how well other support groups do, I decided to set this one up and I’m really pleased that patients, all at different stages of their treatment, have attended, shared their stories, had some fun and met others going through the same things.
“I wanted to create a space where women could share their journeys and support one another. I noticed that some patients with lower-grade cancers were finding things particularly difficult, so it was important to bring together women with different diagnoses and stages of treatment to show that, whatever the grade or stage, there is hope and you can continue to live your life.
“I also want the ladies to tell me what they would like from the group so that each session can be shaped around their needs. We’re hoping to meet every three months and invite guest speakers along to talk about the support available, such as our Outreach Team.
“The first meeting went really well. The ladies said it was lovely to hear how others had coped during their cancer diagnosis and they all turned up with chocolates and biscuits to share. We are so thankful to Well Wishers for supporting us and can’t wait to get another date in the diary.”
Patient Kayleigh Winstanley, who has been under the care of Walsall Manor Hospital for the past two years after being diagnosed with 3B ovarian low-grade serous carcinoma, said: “I have really enjoyed the group and we have all been happy to share our stories, listen to others and support each other.”
Georgie Westley, Fundraising Manager, said: “When Sarah approached the charity to ask for support we were more than happy to do so. After being a guest speaker at other support groups, I have seen firsthand the benefit our patients receive.”
