An event to raise awareness of the support available for victims of domestic abuse has been hailed a success following a month-long social media awareness campaign.

The campaign, run by Walsall Healthcare’s Safeguarding Team, Teenage Pregnancy Service and Well Wishers charity, highlighted the increased risk of domestic abuse during major football tournaments like the FIFA Club World Cup.

It has involved video messages from Walsall’s squad and posts on social media before England games, directing people to the support available.

Research has shown that incidents of domestic abuse can rise during these periods, making awareness campaigns and access to support services particularly important.

The campaign culminated in a community awareness event held in the Atrium at Walsall Manor Hospital, bringing together Trust staff, partner organisations and members of the public to encourage conversations about domestic abuse, highlight available support services and promote safety and wellbeing.

Former Walsall Football Club Caretaker and Assistant Manager Martin O’Connor attended the event and praised the range of organisations involved.
He said: “I have come today and learnt a lot from the different stall holders. The more we are switched on to safeguarding, the better for everyone.”

Visitors were able to speak with a range of organisations offering support and advice, while enjoying activities including table football, Subbuteo, cakes, raffle prizes and giveaways accompanied by local singer Nehanda.

Rachel Dale, Lead Nurse for Safeguarding Adults and Trust Prevent Lead, said: “The event showcased the support and services available for victims of domestic abuse. It follows our social media campaign to raise awareness during major football tournaments, when, unfortunately, the number of incidents can increase.

“We wanted to bring everyone together to showcase the fantastic services available for people who need support. The event has been really well supported, and it’s been encouraging to see so many people taking the time to find out more.”

Jay Fisher, Police Community Support Officer (PCSO), also welcomed the event.

He said: “I think this event was a great way to promote awareness of domestic abuse so people know what help is available and where they can go for support.

“It’s important that people report domestic abuse as soon as possible. By speaking up and accessing support, we can help protect victims and prevent further harm.”

More than £600 was raised through a raffle leading up to the event will be shared between Well Wishers, Walsall Healthcare’s charity, and survivors living in refuges across Walsall, helping to support those affected by domestic abuse.
