A much-valued member of the nursing workforce has retired after 45 years of service to the NHS.

Sonia Jenkinson, Specialist Stroke Nurse at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, began her nursing journey in March 1981, training at the Sister Dora School of Nursing in Walsall, before qualifying in 1984.

Her first post was as a Staff Nurse on Ludlow Ward at Goscote Hospital. Just two years later, she became an Elderly Care Sister on the old South Wing wards.

Following a short break from the NHS, Sonia returned to the Manor Hospital in 1987. In 2004, she became Matron at Goscote Hospital, leading services until its closure before moving on to become Elderly Care Matron at Manor Hospital.

In 2012, Sonia took on the role of Lead Nurse for Stroke Services, helping to shape and improve care for stroke patients across our community.

Although she officially semi-retired in September 2017, she returned the very next day in a part-time role as a Specialist Stroke Nurse for Stafford Community Stroke Service.

As Sonia embarks on her well-earned retirement, she is looking forward to pursuing new interests, enjoying more holidays and spending time with her grandchildren.

She said: “I have enjoyed my career immensely and I am only retiring to pursue other interests, have more holidays and spend more time with my grandchildren.

“During my career I have met some amazing people and made some great friends. I will be so sad to leave after 45 years.”

Cat Noble, Team Leader/ Advanced Physiotherapist for the Community Stroke Team, said: “Over her many years of dedicated service, Sonia has had a tremendous impact on her patients, colleagues, and Stroke development as a whole.

“She will be missed by all, and we wish her the happiest retirement, spending quality time with her family.”
