  • Dr Chris Newson, Consultant Anaesthetist, holds balloon at retirement party.

After more than four decades in healthcare, a much-loved Walsall Consultant Anaesthetist has hung up his theatre scrubs for the last time.

Dr Chris Newson trained at Guy’s Hospital London with posts in Taunton, Bristol and Birmingham before joining Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust as a Consultant in 1995.

His career has focused on anaesthesia and pain management in patients before, during and after surgical procedures, and he has held a number of key posts including Clinical Safety Officer, Clinical Director for Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Pre-assessment Lead.

Will Goude, Divisional Director of Surgery, was among staff who gathered at his retirement party in the Learning Centre at Walsall Manor Hospital.

He said: “On behalf of the division I’d like to say thank you. We have appreciated your incredible work ethic and the significant contributions made towards enhancing the care provided to our patients.

“It’s going to be a great loss without you.”

Dr Yemi Babatola, Consultant Anaesthetist and Specialist in Pain Management, presented an overview of Dr Newson’s career highlights and shared well wishes from colleagues.

He said: “You have been the backbone of the ICU. What you’ve done over the course of your career has made it the place it is today.

“With a creative mind, you have always had innovative ideas to improve our service, while always encouraging others to see things from different perspectives.”

Outside of work the 65-year-old grandfather is known for being an entertainer and has played host to many staff barbeques and Christmas parties.

He has often showcased his magical hobby at talent shows organised through the Trust’s Well Wishers charity – winning second place at the 2024 event with a series of tricks.

His wife Diane shared her own reflections at the event.

She said: “He’s had many great professional experiences, including a period spent in America while carrying out medical research.

“When we returned to the UK in 1995, Chris wanted to be part of a hospital where he could make a difference, and he’s certainly done just that. We’re really proud of him.”

Dr Newson added: “The anaesthetics service itself has changed dramatically over the years with the development of technology.

“It’s been a privilege to work with so many great people here in Walsall. ICU is a wonderful place to work, and I’m so very humbled by the kind words of my colleagues. Thank you all.”

The retiree now looks forward to more time spent on his hobbies of flying, sailing and performing magic.
