Theatre staff from Walsall Manor Hospital have tackled the highest mountain in Wales to raise money to refurbish an anaesthetic room.

The staff from Theatre 11 at the hospital completed the sponsored Snowdon hike in five hours to transform the anaesthetic room to make surgery less daunting for children.

Thanks to support from Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust’s Well Wishers charity, it now boasts colourful walls and some fun counting games for young patients to help calm and distract them.

The new wall art has been funded by £2,000 from the sponsored hike, £530 from a Well Wishers family cricket event and £1,813 from the money the charity raises in its Fundraising Hub.

Laura Nunn, Theatre Team Leader, said: “I am so proud of all of my team and the Surgeons, how we have pulled together to complete the exhausting hike.

“The colourful and vibrant wall mural in the anaesthetic room has helped to create a more child-friendly environment within Theatres.

“It provides a calming distraction and reduces anxiety for children undergoing surgery, ensuring a more positive hospital experience.”

Louisa Adams, Clinical Theatre Services Manager, said: “We are so proud of our team for what they have achieved and how they have worked together to raise the funds and to organise for this to be completed. This will have such a positive impact on our paediatric patients during their peri-operative journey.”

Georgie Westley, Fundraising Manager, added: “Thanks to Laura and her amazing team from Theatre 11 for completing this amazing challenge. The new wall mural looks brilliant, and I have already heard some great feedback from young patients via our Paediatric Play Specialists.

“It has enhanced our patients’ experience and boosted staff morale too. Well done team.”
