An “innovative” new centre at Walsall Manor Hospital is in the frame for a national construction award.

Tilbury Douglas built Walsall Manor Hospital’s Urgent and Emergency Care Centre which opened to its first patients in March last year.

The building has been shortlisted in Project of the Year and Community Project of the year categories within The Construction News Awards.

Judges will announce the winners at a ceremony at JW Marriott Grosvenor House Hotel in London’s Park Lane tomorrow evening (11 July).

The two-storey development has significantly improved emergency care facilities and capacity and has provided almost 5,000 square metres of additional clinical space.

It includes an Urgent Treatment Centre, ED including Resus and Rapid Assessment and Treatment area, and Children’s ED, co-located Paediatric Assessment Unit, Acute Medical Unit and provision for Frailty and Community Integrated Assessment services.

It also includes re-configuration of the current ED footprint, to incorporate improved Ambulatory Emergency Care and Imaging services.

Various specialist facilities are located throughout, such as an isolation room for infectious patients, bariatric provision and digital x-ray rooms. All areas have been designed specifically to enhance clinical staff efficiency, improve quality of care, improve patient experience, and improve the working environment for staff.

Ned Hobbs, Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Operating Officer at Walsall Healthcare, said: “We’re proud to be able to offer state of the art facilities for patients and a high-quality working environment for staff and this project is the culmination of a lot of hard work and a rewarding partnership with Tilbury Douglas. Good luck for a well-deserved win!”

Tilbury Douglas delivered the project just over two years after the first enabling works got underway in January 2021.

Simon Butler, Managing Director Building Central at Tilbury Douglas, said: “It is great to see the prestigious Construction News Awards recognising the importance of the new high-quality, modern development, that is significantly assisting Walsall Healthcare in improving the patient experience.”

The award submission states: “Walsall Manor Urgent and Emergency Care Centre showcases the ‘art of the possible’ for healthcare developments, delivering an innovative, high performing building that supports an effective new clinical model that is already proving to have positive outcomes on healthcare metrics.

“The project exhibits excellence in all core aspects of the Construction Playbook, from technology and modern methods of construction, to a multi-layered social value plan and sustainability strategy. Consciously developed with the future in mind, this proudly local project stands tall as a national precedent in its sector.”
