A Walsall team is shining even brighter after being awarded a Cavell Star for its “fantastic” work.

The Older People’s Mental Health Team received a Cavell Star Award this week after being nominated by a colleague.

The Walsall Healthcare team has a focus on patients with delirium/dementia and complex patients and offers mental health support and guidance to the wider Trust when required.

An inspiring national awards programme, Cavell Star Awards are given to nurses, midwives, nursing associates and healthcare assistants who show exceptional care to one of three groups of people: their colleagues, their patients and patients’ families.

Jodie Kirby-Owens, Lead Nurse for Mental Health submitted the nomination for the team and said:

“I nominated them for their excellence in care, for all ages of mental health patients that attend the acute setting. The team goes above and beyond to support mental health patients in receiving appropriate care and treatment at all times. They demonstrate compassion and care in practice for patients and colleagues continually. I am extremely proud of what the team has achieved with the ongoing national pressures for mental health currently.”

Lee Evans, Matron at Walsall Healthcare, and Noel Chigwedere, Interim Matron, at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, said: “We are really proud and appreciative to have been awarded the Cavell Star.

“It’s nice to feel acknowledged and we are grateful for the support we have received from the top. Even after a difficult few years and current pressures it just goes to show that you can always achieve more.”

The award was presented by Group Chief Executive Professor David Loughton CBE.

He said: “I think this team is brilliant. Against all odds they do fantastic work, day in day out.

“Since the pandemic and now with the cost of living crisis we are seeing even more demand for mental health services. Even with all of these pressures the team still delivers excellent care; they are so deserving of this award.”

  • Noel Chigwedere – Interim Matron, The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust
