Walsall mum Sara Meredith whose son is a regular patient at Walsall Manor Hospital children’s ward has written a book inspired by him as well as his favourite TV show The Yorkshire Vet.

Sara, who is a foster carer, has five children – four daughters who are all grown up and one son aged seven. Her one son Daniel, has very complex needs.

He was born at 27 weeks and suffered trauma to his brain and damage to his pituitary gland.

Daniel is registered blind and due to the damage to his brain cannot move freely and needs a wheelchair.

He also suffers from cerebral palsy, epilepsy and chronic lung disease among many other health problems.

His 45-year-old mum has written a book titled ‘Daniel the vet and his new best friend’.

When asked why she wanted to write the book she said:

“I was writing stories before I can even remember and also for my children before they were even born. I always used to write stories for my girls.

“My son Daniel is obsessed with watching The Yorkshire Vet so I decided to make stories where he got to be the vet and he absolutely loved them.

After my friend heard about this she dared me to send a story to a publisher so I did and they actually offered me a contract!”

When asked how it felt to be published she said:

“Having the book in my hands is incredible. I always dreamed of having my own book published and to see it with my own name on there and all the illustrations in it feels so surreal. I’m really proud of myself. The illustrations are done by my friend Caroline who is also a mother who has a child with complex needs.

“However, Daniel was a bit upset as there wasn’t a cow in this story! So in the next story I have promised him that there would be a cow.”

Sara brought in some copies for Ward 21 too.

She said: “Daniel is on the ward a lot and we love and appreciate the staff so much for everything they have done. I can’t thank them enough.”

Sara is already getting ready to write her second book and says “this next book will be about challenging disability and diversity as well as braking down assumptions”.

If you would like to purchase the book it is now available on amazon and in major bookstores.
