Young patients from Walsall enjoyed a magical trip on board the Santa Express thanks to the generosity of a volunteer-run railway.
Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust’s Well Wishers charity and the team at Chasewater Railway came together to treat deserving families to a festive tour around Chasewater Country Park in Burntwood.
All those aboard enjoyed music, treats and time with Father Christmas himself.
Patient Honey-Grace and family hopped on the first train of the day.
The two-year-old, who has cerebral palsy and epilepsy, had been recovering from a recent chest infection that needed a stay in hospital.
Mum Tara Duffy, a Community Staff Nurse at the Trust, said: “It’s great having that family time, especially as it’s something we can all do together.
“Honey-Grace loves the sparkles and twinkly lights so it’s a great sensory experience for her. We’re grateful to Well Wishers.”
It was the “start of the festive season” for the parents of one-year-old Freddie Smith, who matched the mood in his colourful Elf outfit.
Freddie, who has Down’s syndrome and Atrioventricular Septal Defect (a hole in his heart), has been in and out of hospital since he was born.
Between Walsall Manor Hospital and Birmingham Children’s Hospital, he’s had various treatments including open heart surgery.
Dad Josh Smith said: ” While Freddie continues to be monitored, we are excited for our first Christmas with him at home.
“We feel quite privileged being here today. We don’t get to go many places where we feel completely safe, as he’s vulnerable to infection, but sat in our compartment is just great. We get to celebrate Christmas as a family.”
Mum Lucy Smith added: “We didn’t tell the kids until last night and they were so excited. It feels like we’re in a Harry Potter film!”
But the magic didn’t stop there – as double celebrations were in order for three-year-old Mila, who was serenaded with Happy Birthday as she stepped out on to the platform.
Mila previously had Wilms’ tumour, a form of kidney cancer, and has spent time with Walsall Healthcare’s Community Children’s Nursing Team post-surgery earlier this year.
Mum Chanel Facey said: “She’s been amazing – after every treatment she’s just wanted to get up and about again.
“The singing today brought tears to my eyes. It’s been a really special day.”
Andy Mould, Director of Chasewater Railway, said: “We’re back for a second year to gift the young patients and their families a train ride with Father Christmas. It’s so important to us that we give something back to our local communities.
“Thanks to all the Volunteer Team who made this happen. It’s been a pleasure to have the children along.”
Georgie Westley, Fundraising Manager at the Trust, said: “A great big thank you to Chasewater Railway for making today such a special one for our young patients who have had to face some incredibly difficult health challenges in their lives.
“Thank you to our Charity Volunteers, and also Rainer Derry from Walsh Funerals and Memorials, who supplied mince pies.
“And remember, you can make a difference all year round by supporting Well Wishers. We’d love to hear from anyone who would like to work with us to make a difference.”
