Nursing Support Workers, described as “the backbone of patient care,” are being celebrated across Walsall Healthcare today.
The Trust is marking Nursing Support Workers’ Day – an annual event held on 23 November.
Promoted by the Royal College of Nursing, the day celebrates the vital contribution these colleagues make to patient care across health and social care settings.
Nursing Support Workers are key members of nursing and multidisciplinary teams, delivering person-centred care. Their hands-on role ranges from taking observations and supporting clinical tasks to offering reassurance and compassion to patients and families.
While responsible for their own actions, all care they provide is delegated and supervised by a Registered Nurse, forming an essential part of safe, effective care.
As part of this year’s celebrations, two Clinical Support Workers (CSWs) from Ward 10 at Walsall Manor Hospital describe what the role means to them.
Patricia, who has worked at the Trust for 11 years, said: “I became a CSW after my mum passed away from cancer. Supporting her made me realise I wanted to help others too. What I love most about the role is the people I work with and the patients I meet every day.”
Pauline, who joined the Trust more than three years ago, explained: “I wanted to be a CSW after caring for relatives when they were unwell. I love helping people, and I think you need a special quality to do this job.”
They both added: “To be a CSW, you have to do it because you care – not for the money. It’s incredibly rewarding, and if you’re thinking about it, go for it. Our work may be behind the scenes, but it makes a huge difference to patients, their families and our colleagues.”
Lisa Carroll, Chief Nursing Officer, said: “Our Nursing Support Workers are the backbone of patient care. They are often the first to comfort a worried relative, notice a change in a patient’s condition, or provide the reassurance people need during difficult moments.
“Their compassion, professionalism and commitment to high-quality care is deeply valued. Today we recognise their essential contribution and thank them for the difference they make to our patients, every single day.”
