Neonatal Unit marks World Prematurity Day in Walsall

Walsall’s Neonatal Unit (NNU) has been marking World Prematurity Day with celebrations and fundraising activities for families currently receiving care.

World Prematurity Day (WPD), marked each year on 17 November, is a global movement that shines a light on premature birth and the profound impact it can have on families.

This year’s theme, Give preterm babies a strong start for a hopeful future, highlights the importance of giving every child the best possible beginning in life, starting from their very first moments.

One grateful mum is Kylie Maritza, 36, whose twin boys, Evan and Elliott, were born at 33 weeks. Kylie has spent the past six weeks in hospital following an emergency C-section. The twins, now four weeks old, remain inpatients on the unit as Elliott continues to receive additional care.

“It has been an emotional and traumatic stay,” said Kylie. “We had to move around a little bit, as both the boys were ready to be discharged, but then Elliott deteriorated, so we had to come back to the unit.

“I have luckily been able to stay in the hospital so I can be here for them both, and I can’t thank the staff enough. As soon as anything happened, they were so quick to help them, and as a mother, they have made me feel so reassured all the way through.

“They are so compassionate and understanding. It really feels like I have had a little family with me every step of the way.”

To mark WPD, Walsall Healthcare’s NNU hosted a promotional stand, held a bake sale, and the Trust’s Well Wishers charity provided self-care bags for parents along with purple care packages for premature babies. Funds raised during the event will also directly support patients and their families.

Shazia Tabassum, Sister on the unit, emphasised the importance of the annual awareness day.

She said: “We are so passionate about celebrating today and raising that much-needed awareness.

“The packs we have given to the babies and families are beautiful and are a great support.

“It is so important to make people aware of the consequences and benefits of doing things early for the baby. It is also good for families and staff to take part in and make them feel they are not alone.”

Georgie Westley, Fundraising Manager, added: “Well Wishers has once again supported World Prematurity Day thanks to the amazing efforts of our generous community.”
