  • Staff celebrate Biomedical Scientist Day

With “blood detectives” and teams working around the clock to ensure timely diagnoses and guide life-saving treatments – staff at Black Country Pathology Services (BCPS) are being celebrated this Biomedical Science Day.

BCPS provides Pathology services for hospitals in Walsall, Wolverhampton, Sandwell and West Birmingham and Dudley. And its hub is at Wolverhampton’s New Cross Hospital with some of its laboratories offering specialist services to the wider NHS as well as work on research studies.

Graham Danks, Group Operational Manager, said most people were unaware of all the disciplines that make up Pathology which are:

  • Clinical Chemistry
  • Microbiology
  • Haematology
  • Blood Transfusion
  • Immunology
  • Specialist Chemistry
  • Cellular pathology
  • Cytology

Biomedical Science Day, organised by the Institute of Biomedical Science, shines a spotlight on the  passion, expertise, and dedication of professionals working in this field.

Graham said: “The sheer range of vital work that goes in in Pathology is breathtaking and I am so proud of all of our colleagues at BCPS who are absolutely making a difference to people’s lives each and every day.

“Each discipline plays a crucial role in people’s lives.

“Haematologists, known as “detectives of the bloodstream,” spot clues in red cells, white cells, and platelets to help Doctors solve medical cases. We have Microbiologists diagnosing, treating, and controlling infectious diseases. They provide essential information for clinical decision-making, public health surveillance, and effective infection prevention and control strategies—helping hospitals manage outbreaks.

“In Clinical Chemistry we carry out routine and emergency blood tests for patients suffering from trauma, heart attacks, diabetes, and kidney failure to find crucial information to help Doctors diagnose and manage life-threatening conditions. And Blood Transfusion provides critical products to patients undergoing life-threating bleeding. It also supports patients undergoing complex treatments, such as cancer treatments and surgical procedures. These are just a few examples.”

Branko Perunovic, Chief Medical Officer, added that a number of ground-breaking innovations are also being made in Pathology including the use of digital and AI technologies.

“This Biomedical Science Day the senior management team want to thank all of our colleagues for their tireless contribution to the health of our communities. Thank you for everything you do – always putting patients first.”
