Urology

The Urology team has expertise in treating a wide range of disorders and diseases of the male genito-urinary tract and female urinary tract. For example, bladder problems with voiding disorders, urinary incontinence, stone disorders in the renal tract and bladder, erectile difficulties, and primary infertility.

The service sees patients with problems relating to kidneys, ureters, the bladder, urethra, prostate and genitalia. Also offered is a fast-track hematuria clinic and an urgent two-week referral for suspected cancer related to the urinary tract.

  • Kidney stones: A range of treatment options are available for kidney stones using a holmium laser and flexible telescopes to reach the kidney.

  • Kidney cancer: Surgery is offered to remove kidney cancer.

  • Prostate surgery: State of the art bipolar resection of the prostate is available and this has enabled the service to discharge patients the following day after surgery. Future plans include increased use of laser surgery to reduce the hospital stay for patients and aid a quicker recovery.

  • Bladder surgery: Treatment is offered for the removal of bladder stones and bladder cancers.

  • Incontinence: Treatments are discussed in the service’s specialist multi-disciplinary meetings and patients can be offered either bulking injections or Botox into the bladder. Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is also planning to develop its service for patients with bladder problems.

Outpatient services include day-case surgery for diagnostic camera examination of the bladder (flexible cystoscopy).

The Urology team consists of four consultant urological surgeons and a specialist doctor. The team is supported by two foundation year trainees and one core surgical trainee. There are two clinical nurse specialists and an assistant practitioner.

The outpatients clinic generally operates between the hours of 9am and 5.30pm, Monday to Friday. Emergency patients are seen in the surgical assessment unit between the hours of 9am and 5.30pm.) and in the Accident and Emergency departments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
