Jingle Babies – it’s a neonatal Christmas party!

On any regular day, a 2 foot Christmas tree would seem somewhat disappointing, however, this wasn’t the case for Rachel and Ben Sedgwick as their 3 month old son won ‘best dressed male baby’ at Walsall Healthcare’s Neonatal Christmas Party – giving his best attempt at a Norwegian fir!

Baby William, who was born prematurely at 35 weeks, was wrapped not in swaddling clothes, but in tinsel and fairy lights – bagging himself first place in the fancy dress competition.

“We saw last year’s winner was a pig in a blanket, so we knew we had to get creative!” said mum Rachel.

The party, which was hosted by Discharge Planning Co-ordinator and Neonatal Midwife Donna Burns, is an annual event for the members of Walsall Healthcare’s Neonatal Support Group; bringing together the families of premature babies to socialise, eat some Christmas cake and have a cheeky photo with Santa Claus.

“I can’t speak highly enough of Donna and her team for organising this event” added Rachel.

“The sessions have been wonderful as they really give you a sense of the community coming together to support one another – plus events like these are a chance for both parents and babies to have some fun.”

A feeling shared by Keli Udeze, who is also grateful for the support given to her and 10-month-old Richard Jr who was born at just 26 weeks and weighing a tiny 1.8 pounds.

Keli said “We were lucky in that Richard had no health complications from an early arrival, however because he was so small, I was keen to get some advice on how best to support him – this is where group has been a massive help.”

“The support group is like a second home for us and I’d recommend it to anyone who is feeling nervous about caring for their premature baby.”

And congratulations to 2-year-old Millie Swift, was giving a boost of elf-esteem by being crowned the ‘best dressed female baby’.

Millie’s mum Julie said: “It’s been great to bring Mille and her brother to the group sessions as it’s nice to talk to people who have gone through a similar experience to you. It makes you feel as though you are not alone as someone else has gone through it too.

“Thanks to Donna who does such a brilliant job!”

If you are interested in joining the support group, who meet on the last Wednesday of every month, please contact Donna on 07766990009.
