Acute medicine and accessing urgent medical advice

In order to try to ease the pressure on health services across Walsall, urgent medical advice and assistance is available from the following:

Acute Medicine:

GP advice line - Acute Medical Unit 

If you need advice on managing a patient, or service information contact the Senior Nurse Co-ordinator who will take details of your query and if the Acute Medical Consultant or Clinical Lead Nurse are not available immediately, they will return the call within 30 minutes. This is available Mon- Friday 09.00 – 18.00 Telephone: 01922 721172 bleep: 2039.

 Ambulatory Emergency Care Service (AEC)

This service is for patients that need acute medical assessment but not necessarily admission to hospital. The service gives access to diagnostics and a treatment plan can be developed  for adult patients with an acute medical problem that may be managed as an outpatient or with community team intervention.

 Patients presenting with the following diagnosis or suspected diagnoses are accepted

  •                 Cellulitis
  •                 Pulmonary Embolism
  •                 Asthma
  •                 Acute Headache              
  •                 lower respiratory tract infections without chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  •                 falls including syncope and collapse
  •                 epileptic seizure
  •                 haemoptysis
  •                 UTI
  •                 deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

 Patients with acute mental health or social needs are not currently accepted in AEC

 The service currently  runs Mon - Fri 09.00 - 17.00 If you wish to refer a patient you may do so by contacting Walsall Manor Hospital 01922 721172 and asking for bleep number 2039.  The Ambulatory Nurse co-ordinator will accept the call and discuss the patient, taking some details.

This service is located within the Acute Medical Unit and all patients are triaged and if unsuitable will be sent through to the Acute Medical Unit.

Acute Medical Unit (AMU)

 This service is for patients who are unstable and require inpatient management of conditions. Patient can be referred by contacting the hospital switchboard who will put the call through to bed bureau. They will take details and occasionally will put the call through to the AMU Coordinator who will advise where to send the patient. 

 This service runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
