   Breastfeeding Support

Supporting breast feeding in hospital

The Breastfeeding Service has a team of 8 Breastfeeding Support Workers. The service now provides support 7 days a week.  We offer support ante-natally, on the delivery and post-natal wards. We do home visits and telephone support and also support mothers and their babies who are on the Neo Natal Unit.

The Breastfeeding Support Workers offer individualised one to one support liaising with Neo Natal staff to help mothers make informed choices on how best to feed their baby.

For Premature babies it is important that mothers are supported and encouraged to breastfeed, especially colostrum a mother's first milk which contains a rich mix of proteins including antibodies which protect a newborn against infections.

We are able to offer support to mums to express on the Neo Natal Unit by either hand expression or if need be use an electric pump to stimulate milk supply in order to establish lactation.

As the baby's condition becomes stable the team supports the Neo Natal staff to encourage mothers where possible to practice skin to skin contact sometimes known as Kangaroo Care as this allows the mother to cuddle and care for her baby and increase milk production.

The service will also continue to support mothers and their baby post Neo Natal Unit with home visits and telephone support and were there is a need a specialist midwife or health visitor for breastfeeding are also available.
