International's Nurses Day - Lynne's Story 

Nursing heroes don’t just support patients to get fit and well, they also strive to help ensure those who are nearing the end of their life are able to live as well as possible with their condition, and are able to die comfortably, with dignity and with the confidence that their loved ones will be supported after their death.

And while she may not wear a cape, Community Palliative Care Clinical Nurse Specialist Lynne Pritchard is just one hero who cares for palliative care patients across the Walsall borough - visiting patients within their homes to help with everything from pain control to emotional support for the patient and their families.

“The Gatekeeper of Delivery Suite” – that’s how midwife Kizzy Hall describes her role as she assesses the needs of mums-to-be who arrive at Walsall Manor Hospital.

Acting as a first point of call, Kizzy determines how urgent a woman’s symptoms are and signposts them to the most appropriate care – whether that be back at home with guidance around dealing with minor aches and pains, or on to the ward in preparation for the delivery of their baby.

From Warburtons to Walsall Healthcare; despite the career change, midwife Louise is still focused on that ‘bun in the oven!’

Newly qualified in March of this year, 35-year-old Louise Webster was always interested in becoming a midwife. After acting as birthing partner for a friend, she decided that she fancied a change from her administration role within the well-known bakery and instead focused her energy on midwifery training.
