Colleagues go the extra mile

Around 30 colleagues joined the Walsall Rotary Club Fun Run at Walsall Arboretum yesterday (Sunday 24 September 2017) to raise money for the Trust’s Well Wishers charity; completing either a 10k run, 5k run or 3k walk.

Trust Member and Volunteer John Winsper and Discharge Co-ordinator Ahmed Bhula were the first boys in blue charity T shirts to cross the 3k finish line.

“It’s great to get involved and support the charity,” said 78-year-old John. “We’ve had great fun and you get to meet colleagues from other areas.”

We then saw our former Digital Communications Manager David Foster fire across the course to become the Well Wishers 5k champion.

David, who now works in a similar role at Home Serve in Walsall, completed the race in 23:7 minutes  – three minutes faster than last year.

“I’ve been working to keep up my training and am really pleased not only to cross as the first 5k Well Wisher but to beat my personal best!” he explained.

“Having worked closely with fundraising, I’ve always cared about supporting the charity and this was a way to continue that support even after leaving the Trust. Plus it’s a great way to keep active!”

Well Wishers’ 10k winner was Consultant Community Paediatrician Shiv Bajdev who completed his race in 1 hour, 14 minutes. The consultant, who has worked at the Trust for nearly three years, was keen to support the charity that has supported him and his colleagues in the past.

“Well Wishers has supported me as part of our efforts to fundraise for the neonatal unit so it’s only right that we help out at events that will see other areas of the Trust get fantastic contributions.”

All entrants received medals for their efforts.

Georgie Westley, Trust Fundraising Manager, added: “It was fantastic to see colleagues come out again for a second year to support Well Wishers. It was great to welcome faces from last year who were looking to beat their times and new faces who wanted to get involved with the charity.

“The money raised will help us make improvements to benefit our patients and their families."

The total amount raised will be announced shortly when all the sponsorship money has been collected. To find out more about Well Wishers check out the website www.walsallhealthcare.nhs.uk/charity.
